Far above the Arctic Circle, everything feels larger: the distances, the silence, nature itself. You can drive for hours barely encountering anyone, except for a reindeer suddenly crossing the road or a mountain peak appearing between the clouds.

It’s only when you start walking that you notice how different this landscape feels. Each day takes you deeper into the wilderness. You sleep in simple cabins without luxury, carry everything you need on your back, and let the rhythm of nature dictate your day. Here, it’s not about reaching your destination as quickly as possible, but about being on the journey.

Kungsleden, literally The King’s Trail, is perhaps Scandinavia’s most famous long-distance trail. I’m not the best person to ask about expectations. I always try to start an adventure like this with a clear mind, precisely so I can be surprised as much as possible along the way. Works every time.

What was on my mind was the question of how basic the cabin comfort would be. And yes, also how managing my period on the trail would go – because let’s be real, that’s just a practical thing to consider. Other than that, I knew it could get tough. The weather in Lapland does whatever it wants, and the trail itself can be long, so I anticipated rugged conditions. I didn’t regret that mindset for a second.

By the way, I already had a few trails under my belt – I had done Jordan Trail and Atlas Trail before, and hiked La Réunion and the Pyrenees independently. Still, this felt different. Swedish Lapland has its own pace, its own serenity.

How tough is the King’s Trail really?

This is the question everyone asks, so I’ll be completely honest. Personally, I didn’t find the trek extremely difficult. But there are a few reasons for that.

I had prepared physically, had previous hiking experience, and the trail itself is very well laid out. There were two days that were a bit tougher, and one day where good fitness was definitely required. But because you have all day to complete each section, everything is manageable. You never have to rush.

And then the most important thing of all, something I really can’t stress enough: your clothing. I was dressed perfectly, with the right layers for every moment. That made every single day a pleasure. One person in our group brought a heavy winter jacket and the wrong shoes, and consequently felt colder than the rest of us quite often. Same trail, same weather, yet a completely different experience. So remember this when packing your backpack for The King’s Trail: proper layers aren’t a minor detail, they make or break your trip.

 snowstorm.

Here’s what happened: the group walking behind us had to sleep in the same cabin as we did, and there simply weren’t enough beds. The solution? We were transported by snowmobile to the next cabin – which happened to be one of the more luxurious ones.

We stayed inside all day while the storm raged outside. There was a sauna. There was even a bar, believe it or not. We talked for hours on end, shared stories, and watched through the window as the snow swallowed up the landscape. In the evening, the power went out, so candles were lit throughout the room for dinner. I can’t explain how magical that felt, with the flickering light and the wind howling against the windowpanes.

The next morning, we woke up to snow walls so high it felt like stepping into a movie. You can’t plan these types of moments. They just happen on The King’s Trail, and that’s precisely why you’ll never forget them.

The Landscape: Vast, White, and Endless

Because of all the snow and clouds, to be honest, I didn’t always see the complete picture. And yet – or perhaps precisely because of that – it was breathtaking.

Sometimes we spent a whole day walking against a white wall. You couldn’t tell where the horizon started or ended. That might sound dull, but it was the exact opposite: meditative, peaceful, and beautifully surreal. As if the world had briefly been put on pause.

During clearer moments, I saw the surrounding hills and mountains loom into view. The cabins were basic, but to me, incredibly cozy.

We usually slept in dorms with bunk beds. Each cabin had a large shared kitchen stocked with pots and pans, and a fireplace with firewood. The toilets were always outside: wooden dry toilets, each with a separate bin for when you’re on your period and need to dispose of something – a small detail that makes a big difference.

In every cabin, you’d also find board games or books to enjoy in the evening. Some places had a drying room and a sauna, but not all of them did. And that sauna doubled as your shower: you heat water on the stove and wash yourself with it. It couldn’t be simpler, but after a long day of hiking, a warm wash feels like pure luxury.

What made those evenings so special was doing everything together. Heating up water, making a fire, cooking meals – all as a team. Afterwards, reflecting on the day by candlelight, laughing over the smallest things. That was truly one of the best feelings I know.

What Will Stay With Me Most

If I had to sum it all up in one thing, it would be the combination of it all. It didn’t feel like a trip; it felt like an expedition.

No cell service, no running water, no electricity. Snow as far as the eye could see, and us right in the middle of it.
